If you work with crystals, you've probably heard that they need
cleansing. The idea is simple: stones are believed to absorb the
energy of the spaces and moods around them, and cleansing is how you
return them to a clear, neutral state, like rinsing a glass before
you pour something new.
Whether or not you take the energetic side literally, a regular
cleansing ritual is a lovely way to slow down and reconnect with
your collection. Here's everything you need, without the mystique.
When should you cleanse a crystal?
There are no hard rules, but most people cleanse a stone in these
moments:
When it's new: fresh from the shop, before first use.
After others touch it: handled at a market or by guests.
After heavy days: once it's been through stress with you.
On a rhythm: many cleanse monthly, at the full moon.
Seven ways to cleanse a crystal
Start with whichever feels most natural and available to you. The
methods marked water-safe matter most, as some stones should never get wet.
1
Moonlight
All stones
The gentlest method and safe for every crystal. Leave your stones on a windowsill overnight under a full moon to cleanse and charge them at once.
2
Running water
Water-safe
Hold hard quartz-family stones under cool running water for a minute, picturing the heaviness washing away. Skip salt water and anything soft or soluble.
3
Smoke
All stones
Pass the stone through the smoke of sage, palo santo or incense. Quick, portable, and safe for delicate crystals that can’t get wet.
4
Sound
All stones
A singing bowl, bell or tuning fork sends vibration through the stone to reset it. Ideal for cleansing a whole collection in one go.
5
Selenite plate
All stones
Rest other crystals on a selenite charging plate overnight. Selenite is believed to clear without ever needing cleansing itself.
6
Earth burial
Hardy stones
Bury grounding stones in soil for 24 hours to return their energy to the earth. Best for tough, opaque stones, so mark the spot well.
7
Brown rice
Dry method
Nestle a stone in a bowl of dry brown rice for a day to draw out heavy energy. A safe, water-free choice for absorbent crystals. Discard the rice after.
Never use water on these
Selenite, halite and satin spar dissolve. Malachite, pyrite
and lapis lazuli can release dust or be damaged. Soft or
fibrous stones (turquoise, angelite) and anything ending in
"-ite" you're unsure about: cleanse with smoke, sound or
moonlight instead.
Charging: the other half of the ritual
Cleansing clears a stone; charging re-energises it toward an
intention. Once cleansed, hold the crystal, set a simple wish for it
(rest, focus, courage) and leave it somewhere meaningful: a moonlit
sill, beside a candle, or pressed to the earth in your garden.
That's it. The ritual is yours to shape.
FAQ
Cleansing and charging questions
There is no fixed rule, though many people cleanse a stone when they first bring it home and then whenever it has been handled often or used during a difficult time. A gentle rhythm, such as once a month or around the full moon, suits most collections.
