Meaning & symbolism
Amethyst is the violet variety of quartz, coloured by traces of iron and natural irradiation deep within the earth. Its name comes from the Greek améthystos, meaning "not intoxicated", and from the ancient belief that the stone could keep its wearer clear-headed and composed. That single idea still sits at the heart of how people reach for amethyst today: as a stone of clarity, calm and gentle protection.
Across traditions it has been linked to the higher mind: intuition, dreaming, and a quiet sense of spiritual connection. It is one of the most approachable crystals for someone just beginning, asking nothing complicated of you and offering a steadying presence in return.

How to use it
In meditation: Hold a tumbled stone in your palm or rest it on your brow as you settle. Let your attention return to its weight and cool whenever the mind wanders.
For sleep: Keep a cluster or point on your nightstand, or tuck a small stone under your pillow. Many people find it helps quiet pre-sleep racing thoughts.
In your space: A geode or cluster on a desk or shelf is the simplest practice of all, a visual cue to slow down, breathe, and reset.
Cleansing & care
Amethyst is energetically absorbent, so it benefits from regular cleansing. Cleanse it in moonlight overnight under a full moon, rest it on a selenite slab or pass it through the tone of a singing bowl, or waft sage or palo santo smoke around it. One caution: keep amethyst out of prolonged direct sunlight, as its violet colour can fade over time.
