Meaning & symbolism

Moss agate is a translucent chalcedony threaded with green dendrites, branching mineral growths formed as iron-rich silicates such as chlorite crept through the silica while it set. Nothing organic was ever involved, and despite the name it is not strictly an agate either: a true agate is defined by concentric banding and moss agate has none, so mineralogists more often call it dendritic chalcedony. Its older name is mocha stone, after the Yemeni port that once traded it into Europe.

Healing properties

Mineralogy

  • Dendritic chalcedony, microcrystalline quartz
  • SiO2 with chlorite or hornblende dendrites
  • Translucent but unbanded
  • 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale

Traditional associations

  • New beginnings
  • Patience and persistence
  • Grounded abundance and connection to nature

How to use it

Traditionally carried when starting something whose outcome is not yet visible, kept in a workspace or a garden, or held during meditation on patience and steady growth. Traditional use, not medical advice.

Cleansing & care

Durable at about 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale with no cleavage. Brief rinsing is fine, mild soap and a soft cloth are enough, and undyed material does not fade.

Questions & answers

No. The green tendrils are dendrites, branching mineral growths, usually iron-rich silicates such as chlorite. No plant was ever fossilised inside.
