Meaning & symbolism

Obsidian is not a crystal in the usual sense but a natural volcanic glass, formed when lava cools so quickly it never has time to crystallise. The result is a glossy, mirror-deep black that ancient cultures shaped into blades, arrowheads and scrying mirrors.

Traditionally it is a stone of protection and truth. It is said to act like a mirror, reflecting back what we would rather not see and helping us face it with honesty. For this reason it is reached for in shadow work and times of difficult change.

Strongly grounding and associated with the root chakra, obsidian is valued for cutting through confusion and bringing a sense of solid, protected footing.

Healing properties

Protection & grounding

  • Strongly associated with the root chakra
  • A traditional shielding stone for the home
  • Bringing a solid, protected footing

Truth & release

  • Reached for in reflection and shadow work
  • Said to mirror what needs to be seen
  • Supporting honest, grounded change

How to use it

Keep obsidian near the entrance of a home as a traditional protective stone, or hold it during reflection when you want to face something honestly.

A polished obsidian sphere or mirror is used for quiet contemplation. Because its energy can feel intense, many people pair it with a softer stone like rose quartz.

Cleansing & care

Obsidian is a glass and can chip or scratch, so store it away from harder stones. It is fine for a quick rinse but should not be soaked.

Cleanse it with sound or moonlight. Handle polished edges with care, as some pieces are knapped to a sharp edge.
