Meaning & symbolism

Moonstone is a luminous feldspar named for its soft, floating sheen, called adularescence, that drifts across the surface like moonlight on water. The June birthstone, it has been honoured across cultures as a stone of intuition, cycles and gentle new beginnings.

Traditions link moonstone to the third-eye and crown chakras and to the rhythms of the moon: it is reached for to deepen intuition, honour natural cycles and welcome fresh starts with grace. Associated with the feminine, with dreaming and with quiet inner knowing, moonstone has a calm, reflective feeling. It is a tender companion for anyone in transition, trusting their instincts or stepping softly into something new.

How to use it

Carry a tumbled stone through a season of change or new beginnings, or keep a piece by the bed to encourage gentle dreaming and a deeper sense of inner knowing.

Cleansing & care

Moonstone is a feldspar at 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, and its real vulnerability is mechanical rather than chemical. It does not dissolve, so a brief rinse and a soft cloth are fine, but it has two cleavage directions meeting at close to 90 degrees, which means a knock or a sudden change of temperature can split it along a plane you cannot see. Avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaners, salt, long soaks and hot water straight after cold. Its sheen comes from microscopic layers inside the crystal rather than from a pigment, so it will not fade in daylight: cleansing it in moonlight is a matter of tradition and preference, not protection.
