Meaning & symbolism

Selenite is a luminous, pearly variety of gypsum named for Selene, the Greek goddess of the moon, in honour of its soft, moon-like glow. It is one of the great cleansing stones, reached for less to add energy than to clear it, sweeping a space, a person or another crystal back to a quiet, neutral calm.

Traditions link selenite to the crown chakra and to a sense of still, high clarity, the kind of clean quiet that follows a good clear-out. Many people use it as their cleansing tool of choice, resting other crystals on a selenite plate to refresh them. Gentle in feeling but practical in use, it brings a sense of light and order wherever it sits.

Healing properties

Cleansing & clearing

  • A go-to stone for clearing energy
  • Used to refresh and recharge other crystals
  • Traditionally swept through a space as a wand

Calm & clarity

  • Associated with the crown chakra
  • Bringing a still, high sense of quiet
  • Adding soft, moon-like light to a room

How to use it

Use it as a cleansing wand: slowly sweep a selenite stick around your body or through a room, picturing heavier energy lifting away as you go.

Keep a flat selenite plate where you store your other crystals and rest them on it overnight to refresh them. A charging bar on a windowsill or shelf also works as a quiet anchor of calm for the whole space.

Cleansing & care

The one rule that matters most: keep selenite away from water. It is a soft gypsum at around 2 on the Mohs scale, softer than your fingernail, and only slightly soluble, about two grams per litre. It will not vanish in a rinse, but water works into the crystal and the surface goes cloudy, chalky or frayed, and the silky sheen does not come back. Never rinse or soak it, and keep it away from steam and radiators too, since heat drives the water out of gypsum's structure. Cleanse it instead with smoke, sound or moonlight, and store it somewhere dry.

Questions & answers

Selenite is traditionally used for cleansing, clearing a space, a person or other crystals back to calm. It is also valued for a still, peaceful feeling linked to the crown chakra.
