Meaning & symbolism
Mookaite is an opaque, fine-grained silica rock from the Kennedy Range area of Western Australia, named after Mooka Creek and Mooka Station. Sold as mookaite jasper, it is geologically a silicified radiolarite from the Early Cretaceous Windalia Radiolarite, built from the silica skeletons of marine plankton and coloured cream, yellow, red, burgundy and mauve by iron oxides.
Healing properties
Geology
- Silicified radiolarite (chert), sold as jasper
- Mostly SiO2 as microcrystalline quartz, with clay and iron oxides
- Windalia Radiolarite, Carnarvon Basin, Early Cretaceous
- About 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale
Traditional associations
- Steadiness during transitions
- Practical courage and decisions
- Curiosity and an ageless spirit
How to use it
Traditionally carried as a tumbled stone or worn as a bracelet through a period of change, held near the base of the spine or the lower belly in meditation for the root and sacral chakras, or kept on a desk while learning something new. These are traditional uses, not medical advice.
Cleansing & care
Forgiving. Well-silicified pieces handle a brief rinse in lukewarm water and a soft cloth, and the colours do not fade in daylight. Avoid long soaks, salt water, oils and perfume, as chalky pieces can be slightly porous. Use the indirect method for crystal water.
