Meaning & symbolism

Rhodochrosite is a raspberry to rose pink manganese carbonate, usually banded in soft white and grey, and its name comes from the Greek for rose coloured. Where rhodonite is traditionally reached for after someone else has hurt you, rhodochrosite is turned inward, toward self worth and the tenderness people find easy to offer everyone but themselves. It grows layer by layer in hydrothermal veins, sometimes as stalactites, and a slice cut across one of those gives the concentric pink and white bullseye the stone is known for. Argentina calls the banded material rosa del Inca, the Inca rose, and treats it as its national stone; the finest transparent crystals came from the Sweet Home Mine at Alma, Colorado, which gave up the celebrated Alma King in 1992 and is now worked out.

Healing properties

Emotional healing

  • Associated with the heart chakra
  • Traditionally reached for in self worth and inner child work
  • Turned inward, toward the wounds you keep repeating on yourself

Geology

  • Manganese carbonate, MnCO3, trigonal system
  • Mohs 3.5 to 4, three directions of perfect cleavage
  • Fizzes in acid, leaves a white streak

Where it comes from

  • Capillitas, Catamarca, Argentina, the banded Inca rose
  • Sweet Home Mine, Alma, Colorado, gem grade crystals
  • Peru, South Africa, Mexico, Romania

How to use it

Sit with a piece in your palm when the voice in your head is harder on you than you would ever be on someone you love, and let the intention be plain rather than elaborate.

Keep a polished slice somewhere you pass every day, on a desk or a shelf, where its banding catches the light and reminds you what you set out to practise.

Pair it with rhodonite when a hurt has two ends, one that came from outside and one you keep repeating on yourself, but store the two apart so the harder stone cannot scratch this one.

Cleansing & care

Rhodochrosite is a carbonate at 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale, with three directions of perfect cleavage, so it is both soft and easy to split. Acid is its real enemy: sweat, perfume, citrus juice and household cleaners all etch the polish, and the marks do not buff out. Keep it dry, wipe it with a soft cloth, never soak it, never use salt or an ultrasonic cleaner, and take a pendant off before you shower. Cleanse and recharge it by dry methods such as moonlight, smoke or sound.

Questions & answers

Look at the markings. Rhodochrosite carries soft white or grey bands that run parallel or in concentric rings, because they are growth layers. Rhodonite carries irregular branching black veins, because those are manganese oxide formed by later alteration. Rhodochrosite is also much softer, so a steel pin marks it easily.
