Meaning & symbolism

Red jasper is an opaque variety of chalcedony, the microcrystalline form of quartz, coloured deep brick red by iron oxide. Like all jasper it is silica that set around a deposit already full of particles, which is why it is opaque, solid and patterned with veins and mottling rather than the curved bands of an agate. It takes a warm polish, sits at about 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, and is one of the most durable stones you can carry loose in a pocket.

Healing properties

Mineralogy

  • Chalcedony, microcrystalline quartz
  • SiO2 with up to about 20% iron oxides and clay
  • Opaque, no banding
  • 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale

Traditional associations

  • Endurance and stamina
  • Grounding and physical steadiness
  • Courage that lasts rather than flares

How to use it

Traditionally carried as a palm stone or worry stone for long stretches of unglamorous effort, held at the base of the spine or placed at the root chakra in meditation, or kept on a desk during a demanding project. These are traditional uses, not medical advice.

Cleansing & care

Forgiving. Mohs 7 with no cleavage, so brief rinsing in water and a wipe with mild soap and a soft cloth are fine. Undyed red jasper does not fade, though anything sold in a colour nature does not make should be kept out of direct sun.

Questions & answers

No, though they are the same mineral. Both are chalcedony. Red jasper is opaque and light will not pass through even a thin edge, while agate is translucent and curved-banded. See the full comparison in our jasper vs agate guide.
