Meaning & symbolism

Pyrite's brassy, metallic glint earned it the nickname "fool's gold", but to crystal lovers it is anything but foolish. Its name comes from the Greek for fire, because it throws sparks when struck against steel.

Traditionally it is a stone of abundance, confidence and drive, reached for to support ambition, willpower and a prosperous, opportunity-minded outlook. Its golden colour links it firmly with the solar plexus and personal power.

Pyrite is also considered protective, said to deflect negativity and keep a workspace feeling grounded and motivated.

Healing properties

Abundance & drive

  • Associated with the solar plexus chakra
  • A traditional stone of prosperity
  • Supporting ambition and willpower

Confidence & protection

  • Encouraging a bold, growth-minded outlook
  • Said to deflect negativity
  • Keeping a workspace grounded and motivated

How to use it

Keep pyrite on a desk or in a workspace to support motivation, confidence and a focus on growth. Many people place a piece in the "wealth corner" of a room or near where they work on finances.

Hold it while setting goals to pair its driving, confident energy with a clear intention.

Cleansing & care

Pyrite contains iron and sulphur, so it must be kept dry. Water causes it to rust and can release sulphur, so never soak it or make an elixir. Wash your hands after handling raw clusters.

It is reasonably hard (6–6.5 on the Mohs scale) but tarnishes with moisture and humidity. Cleanse it with sound or moonlight and store it somewhere dry.
