How to Make Moon Water (and What to Do With It)

Moon water is one of the simplest rituals in the crystal world. Here is how to make it safely, which full moons to use, and gentle ways to work with it.

How to Make Moon Water (and What to Do With It)

Moon water is simply water that has been left out under the light of the moon, traditionally to absorb its calm, reflective qualities. It is one of the gentlest and most popular rituals in modern crystal practice, and you need almost nothing to begin.

The method

Fill a clean glass jar with water and set it on a windowsill or outside where moonlight can reach it. Leave it overnight and bring it in before the morning sun. The full moon is the most popular time, but any clear night works.

Adding crystals

Many people place a stone beside the jar to lend its theme to the water:

  • Amethyst for calm.
  • Rose quartz for the heart.
  • Clear quartz for clarity.

Never put water-soluble or potentially unsafe stones (selenite, malachite, pyrite, halite) directly in water; keep them outside the jar instead.

Using it

Moon water is used to mist a room, water plants, anoint a candle, or simply as a mindful pause. If you intend to drink it, use only food-safe, undyed stones kept outside the glass, and clean drinking water. When in doubt, keep the stone out of the water entirely.

Like all our rituals, moon water is symbolic and contemplative. Its value is in the small, intentional moment of making it, not in any medical effect.
