Cleansing and charging are two different rituals that often get mentioned in the same breath. Cleansing clears the energy a stone has absorbed; charging is the step afterwards, where you restore its sense of vitality and pair it with fresh intention. Think of it as airing out a room, then opening the curtains to let the light back in.
Choosing a method
There is no single "correct" method. Choose one that feels meaningful to you and, just as importantly, one that is physically safe for the stone in your hand.
Ways to charge a crystal
- Moonlight. The gentlest and most universal method. Leave your stones on a windowsill overnight, ideally around the full moon. Safe for every crystal, including soft and water-sensitive ones.
- Sunlight. A short hour of morning sun suits warm stones like carnelian and citrine. Keep it brief, as prolonged sun fades amethyst, rose quartz, fluorite and aventurine.
- Earth. Resting a stone on soil, or burying it for a day, is a grounding way to recharge protective and root-chakra stones such as black tourmaline and smoky quartz.
- Sound. A singing bowl, bell or tuning fork sends vibration through a stone and is completely safe for delicate pieces and clusters.
- Selenite or clear quartz. Place smaller stones on a selenite slab or beside a quartz cluster overnight. A tidy, no-risk method many people use as their default.
- Breath and intention. Hold the stone, take a slow breath, and picture it filled with light as you name a simple intention. The most portable charge of all.
- Visualisation. Sit quietly and imagine warm light pouring into the stone until it feels bright again. Pairs naturally with meditation.
A quick safety note
Never charge soft or water-soluble stones (selenite, halite, malachite, pyrite) in water, and keep coloured quartz out of long sun exposure. When in doubt, moonlight is always safe.
Charging your own intention
We share these practices as traditional and symbolic. Charging your crystals is really a way of charging your own intention. It is a small, deliberate pause that brings the quality you are reaching for back into focus.
